Kithira (Kythera)

On my way to Kithira for the first time, in 1991, people in Greece wondered why - what did I want to do there? It is very far away, one said, there are just a lot of churches, said another. I had been captured by a few words in a prospectus, and yes, it seemed very remote.

However, the journey to Kithira actually was my way home. Here, I soon realised, was the place I had been looking for. I found myself at ease on the island south of Cape Maleas, the point where Odysseus, on his way back from the Trojan war, was blown off course by the winds and the sea to face adventures around the Mediterranian.

Meeting people on Kithira changed my life. Adventures, challenges and indeed a deeper understanding of la condition humaine have enriched my life. To change is a hard process, and it takes time. I owe many thanks to people on Kithira for being so patient, tolerant and supportive from my first cautious steps to braver leaps, at times followed by failure and disappointment amongst the bright and precious moments. They are wise enough to let me learn slowly, and so don´t interfere - except by stories, sayings and other indirect means.

In the last years I have spent little time on Kithira, however it is there in my heart, a treasure of love.
